A Singaporean who was detained under the Internal Security Act for planning and preparing to engage in militant activities was released on a Suspension Direction (SD) on Feb 21.
The Home Affairs Ministry, MHA, said the self-radicalised Singaporean, Abdul Basheer Abdul Kader, was arrested and detained under the ISA in 2007.
MHA said Abdul Basheer was influenced by the extremist propaganda he read on the Internet.
The Ministry said he had developed the mindset that he had to wage ‘militant jihad’ in a land where Muslims were ‘under attack’.
At the time of his arrest, he had made specific plans to pursue ‘militant jihad’ in Afghanistan.
He was, however, arrested before he could embark on his violent agenda.
Since his detention, MHA said Abdul Basheer has been cooperative in investigations and shown significant progress in his rehabilitation.
As such, he was assessed to no longer pose a security threat that required preventive detention. |
