On track to meet recycling target - Environment Minister
8 Mar 2010

Singapore's overall recycling rate has been going up - from 40 percent in 2000 to 57 percent last year.

Speaking in Parliament, Minister for Environment and Water Resources Yaacob Ibrahim says Singapore is " on track " to meet the 60 percent recycling target by 2012.

However, MP for Sembawang GRC Dr Lim Wee Kiak questioned whether it was possible to reach the target by next year:

" Sir I would like to ask the minister, in order to achieve the 60 per cent recycling rate by 2012, is it achievable and what are we doing to acheive that because we took one year to increase from 56 to 57 percent so I am not sure if we can reach that 3 percent."

Dr Yaacob says his ministry is studying how it can further improve the effectiveness of existing recycling efforts.

" We have to look at the specifics now in order to achieve that 2 to 3 per cent increase, so we are going to focus our minds on food waste, that is one potential source we can reduce but at the same time for domestic waste there is still some room for improvement. So what we are doing now, is that we are reviewing the National recycling programme, the NRP on how best we can up the number. "
