A woman chooses Invisalign or Braces

Thinking of having your teeth straightened? Well, there are two popular options available for you in Singapore right now – metal braces or Invisalign. Braces have existed for a long time (since the 18th century), while Invisalign is still a relatively new product, having been introduced in 1999. Despite this, Invisalign in Singapore has slowly but surely become a very popular alternative to dental braces. In this article, Ubiqi details why you should choose Invisalign for straightening your teeth.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a brand of orthodontic devices called clear aligners, which are used to straighten and align teeth. Unlike traditional braces that are clearly visible on your teeth and are immediately noticeable, Invisalign is, as its name suggests, invisible, and can only be noticed at a very close distance. This makes it a great option for people who want to keep a low profile and avoid the unsightly look of braces.

Invisalign is made using a comfortable clear plastic that is worn over your teeth to slowly and gently move your teeth to a straight position. To create the clear aligners, the specialist will create a precise 3D model of your teeth through X-rays and pictures. These 3D models are then used to configure the series of aligner trays so that they are specifically customized for your treatment. These aligners are strong enough to apply pressure to your teeth to subtly move them into the desired position.

What are braces?

Dental braces, on the other hand, are metal brackets that are glued to your teeth and are attached together with wires and small rubber bands. For a lot of braces, they can look a bit unsightly and are near impossible to hide. However, there have been many updated designs that are sleeker-looking and may even have a colour that matches your teeth.

Invisalign vs braces

Here we discuss the common factors that most patients are concerned about when deciding whether to get Invisalign or braces. All of these factors have a great impact on a patient’s final decision so you must know and understand everything about these two popular teeth straightening treatments.

  1. Teeth straightening process

If you decide to get braces, remember that they have to be attached permanently to your teeth for the whole treatment period. The first few days of wearing them will feel a bit uncomfortable or painful since you will have to get used to their presence. Some common tasks like eating and talking can be difficult to do and it may take quite a bit of time before you can fully get used to wearing braces. You can expect full results from your braces at about 2 years since you’ve started wearing them.

In the case of Invisalign, the clear aligner trays are removable. This means that if you need to do something with your mouth, such as eating, then you can remove them to reduce the discomfort. Your dentist will instruct you on how much time you have to wear your clear aligner trays each day – on average, you’ll have to wear them at least 22 hours per day to ensure the effectiveness of the treatment. Unlike braces, in which you’ll be using the same brackets for the duration of the treatment, for Invisalign, you have to get new aligner trays every two weeks to adjust for your current teeth position. The whole Invisalign treatment process takes about 6 to 18 months.

  1. Maintenance

In the case of dental braces, the maintenance is done by brushing your brackets whilst brushing your teeth. What’s important is that you brush regularly to ensure that no damage is done to your braces. It may also be helpful to use a water flosser to clean both your teeth and braces more thoroughly. You will also have to go to your dentist’s clinic for a follow-up consultation at least once each month to ensure that your braces are working correctly. When it comes to your food options, you may realize that some hard foods like apples may be painful to eat due to the delicate situation of your teeth. It is recommended that people with braces stick to eating soft foods that don’t require a lot of chewing.

For cleaning your Invisalign aligner trays, you can either use the Invisalign Cleaning System, or you can also brush and rinse your aligner trays on lukewarm water. Follow up consultations for Invisalign are usually held every 5 weeks, depending on the situation. If, however, the aligner trays aren’t fitting well, you may have to visit your dentist to have it adjusted. While eating food, you should always remove your clear aligners to prevent any staining. It’ll defeat the purpose of the treatment if your clear aligners become noticeable to other people because of a stain.

  1. Cost

The price of dental braces can vary from $1800 to $5000 depending on the type of brackets used and the severity of your teeth position. Invisalign, on the other hand, costs about $5000 on average for the whole treatment.

Why choose Invisalign over dental braces?

The main draw of Invisalign as an alternative over braces is that it’s a more discreet option since it is basically invisible to other people. You wouldn’t have to draw any unneeded attention to yourself, which at times could be embarrassing for a lot of people. There’s also the advantage of it being removable, which means you won’t need to experience any difficulties when eating or talking. There are also not many diet restrictions compared to when wearing braces. Although it’s still a relatively new technology, more and more people are now choosing Invisalign for their needs over dental braces.
